Abstract

Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a lethal complication of
autoimmune conditions. Its diagnosis and management remains
challenging till date in view of paucity of standard protocols.
Plasmapheresis has shown promise if used early in the course of
disease. We hereby describe a case report of a young male patient who
presented with multiorgan failure. He was diagnosed with MAS
triggered by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). He was successfully
treated with steroids, cyclophosphamide and plasmapheresis.
